Sajith Premadasa, MP says the recently launched Grama Charika programme, to strengthen the party at the grassroots, is nothing new. "I have been working in the deep South for years," he said yesterday before leaving for India to attend a four-day confab commencing today (Oct. 20).

In a brief interview with The Island, Premadasa said that the party leadership had failed to realise that such ad hoc measures wouldn’t make any difference on the ground. "What we need is a genuine change in our strategy. There is absolutely no point in adopting dilatory tactics," he said. Premadasa indicated that he wouldn’t throw his weight behind the latest initiative launched by UNP leader Wickremesinghe, last week, before leaving for the UK and Norway.

Responding to a query by The Island, Premadasa said that the confab organised by the Asian Institute of Transport Development would bring experts, specialists and lawmakers together. He said that he would get an opportunity to discuss a range of other issues on the sidelines of the confab.

UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva and UPFA MP Prof. Rajiva Wijesinhe are also on the Sri Lankan delegation.
